Every building in New York with a steam pressure drop worth a turbine.And the 142 that will waste your time.

The finding

Anyone can pull the public energy data and sort by steam use. That list is wrong, and it is wrong in a way you cannot see from the energy data.

A backpressure turbine needs a high-pressure header to let down. Most large New York buildings run low-pressure heating steam. They burn enormous amounts of fuel and they have no recoverable drop at all. They sit at the top of a consumption ranking and they are unsellable.

Separating the two is a matter of public record. It is simply not in the energy data, and it takes a building-by-building match that nobody bothers to do.

What the screen produces

Documented high-pressure header, or district steam let down at the service entrance. These are callable now.

Filed low-pressure boilers. No header, no recoverable drop, not a prospect at any flow. Nothing in the energy data says so.

The middle column is the one that is hard to get and the one that protects you. Pitching a letdown turbine into a low-pressure heating building is a call that ends badly with the one facilities engineer whose opinion travels.

A turbine needs a real pressure drop. Whether a given building has one is on the public record, and it is not in the energy data. Barely one percent of the buildings with a record qualify.

Two things it corrected

An earlier pass of this work, done on consumption alone, put the annual opportunity at roughly $66M. Applying the pressure qualifier cut it to $24.9M. The smaller number is the one that survives a site visit.

Public housing looked like the largest single segment in the city by fuel use. It runs low-pressure residential heating almost everywhere. Two buildings survive. That segment was the headline of the earlier pass.

Not on this page

Building names, addresses, per-site sizing, the mechanical contractors who already service those steam plants, and the named contacts. That is the deliverable, not the teaser.

I do this kind of screening work for water and energy companies selling into municipal and institutional buyers. The value is not the list. It is knowing which doors are physically closed before anyone knocks on them.
